Scholarship Money available!
Apply now for the Rocky Mountain Chapter SLA Rebecca Jackson Memorial Scholarship!
Deadline is September 11, 2009!
YOU could be the winner of the 2009 Rebecca Jackson Memorial Scholarship!
Each year, the Rocky Mountain Chapter of SLA awards a scholarship to a library school student currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in Library/Information Science. Eligible candidates are required to be living in the Chapter region (Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, or South Dakota) and/or be enrolled in a graduate library school program in the Chapter region or abroad (distance program.)
The amount awarded depends on the funds raised through donations and our scholarship fundraising event held each year. This year’s event “RMSLA Day at the Ballpark” promises a nostalgic day a great American pastime featuring the Colorado Rockies vs. the Cincinnati Reds at Coors Field on Monday, September at 1:10 pm. Bring out your family and friends to join us at the ballpark. Let’s have a fun relaxing time watching great baseball and supporting the Rebecca Jackson Scholarship fund. To find out more about the even or order tickets, go to the RMSLA website at: http://units.sla.org/chapter/crmt/index.asp
You may also make a contribution at any time to the scholarship fund by contacting the RMSLA Treasurer, Laura Cullerton at lcullerton@plattcolorado.edu
Of course, you cannot be awarded the scholarship unless you fill out an application first. The application essentials, in MS Word format, are listed below along with additional guidelines and information. A PDF application can be found on the RMSLA website at http://units.sla.org/chapter/crmt/index.asp Click on the Rebecca Jackson Memorial Scholarship link!
Or you can contact Michelle Rainbolt, the RMSLA Academic Relations Chair and she will provide a copy upon request. However, to be considered for a scholarship award, your application must be postmarked/emailed/faxed by midnight on September 11, 2009.

Good Luck!
Michelle Rainbolt 303-795-7151 or 303-204-2117 or mrainbolt@gmail.com
Application guidelines and process:
“ Applicants must be residents (and living) in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming or South Dakota.
“ Applicants must be currently enrolled in an initial graduate degree program in library and information science, whether in the Chapter region or via a distance graduate program. (The scholarship is not awarded to PhD candidates or for continuing education/certificate programs.)
“ Part-time and/or online students are eligible as well as full-time students.
“ Applicants must be SLA members. If the person is not an SLA member upon application, they should be by award time. Belonging to a related special libraries organization such as CCML or CoALL is a plus.
“ Eligible candidates need to have completed classes so that they have an academic track record and a school reference. If they are accepted to a program, but have not completed any coursework prior to the application deadline, we recommend that they apply the following year.
“ The person needs to display financial need. If financial need is not described or documented, the candidate may be contacted for additional information during a tight decision. If an individual has financial need, but is receiving a form of financial aid or other scholarships, then it is considered when evaluating their financial need.
“ The candidate needs to articulate an interest in special libraries. Work background is considered in evaluating their interest.
“ Involvement in the Rocky Mountain Chapter is a plus.
Other criteria we consider:
We would like the award to go to someone who is committed to staying in the region, if possible. Indications are that they have a home or family and an employment history in the area, and are not just residing there for a year or two while in school.

June 2009 – For immediate release
The University of Arizona Digital Information Management (DigIn) online graduate certificate program has been awarded a prestigious grant of over $900,000 from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, primarily to fund scholarships.
The DigIn curriculum combines intensive, hands-on technology learning with a thorough grounding in the theoretical principles needed to manage large and complex digital collections.
The program takes a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to managing digital information and is designed to support a wide range of career paths, especially involving libraries, museums, archives, and records management.
Graduate certificates are increasingly being recognized as a means for professionals with advanced degrees to update their knowledge and skills. DigIn also offers a path for those with undergraduate degrees who are interested in digital collections but who may not yet be ready to commit to a full degree program.
The grant will also greatly boost DigIn’s mission to foster disciplinary, institutional, geographic, and cultural diversity in the management of digital collections and services.
Thus, DigIn strongly encourages scholarship applicants representing historically underserved institutions, regions, and communities, as well as students expressing interest in working with digital collections in culturally diverse settings.
DigIn is now accepting applications for admission and financial aid for the Fall 2009 semester. The application deadline has just been extended to July 10.
Late applications will be accepted, though Fall admission cannot be guaranteed once the July 10 deadline has passed. Late applicants will also be considered for admission in the Spring 2010 semester.
The program is delivered entirely online and does not require students to reside in or travel to Tucson. Students generally complete the certificate in
4-6 semesters (15-27 months).
DigIn was founded in 2007 with major funding from Institute of Museum and Library Services, the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute’s mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.
Our current partners also include the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the Sedona Conference.
Additional details on the program including course descriptions, admissions requirements and application forms may be found on the program website:
http://digin.arizona.edu
Prospective applicants are also welcome to contact the DigIn staff at:

Applications open for 2009 Gordon M. Conable Conference Scholarship, sponsored by Freedom to Read Foundation
The Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF) has opened applications for the 2009 Gordon M. Conable Conference Scholarship, which will enable a library school student or new professional to attend ALA’s 2009 Annual Conference.
The scholarship’s goal is to advance two principles that Gordon Conable held dear: intellectual freedom and mentorship. The 2009 ALA Annual Conference will be held July 9–15 in Chicago.
It provides for conference registration, transportation, housing for six nights and six days per diem. In return, the recipient will be expected to attend various FTRF and other intellectual freedom meetings and programs at conference, consult with a mentor/board member and present a report about his or her experiences. The 2009 Conable Scholarship recipient also will attend the Freedom to Read Foundation’s 40th Anniversary Gala, scheduled for Sunday, July 12 at the new Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago.
The deadline for submitting an application for the 2009 Conable Scholarship is Friday, March 20; the award will be announced in April.
Students currently enrolled in a library and information studies degree program and new professionals (those who have worked in librarianship for three years or less) are eligible to receive the Conable Scholarship. Those interested must submit an application that includes two references and an essay detailing their interest in intellectual freedom issues. Applicants also are asked to attach a résumé, particularly those who are working professionals. If the recipient is already registered for ALA’s Annual Conference, he or she will have the conference fee refunded.
To apply for the Gordon M. Conable Conference Scholarship, visit http://www.ftrf.org/ala/aboutala/offices/oif/oifprograms/ifawards/conablescholarship/Conablemain.cfm. For more information, please contact Jonathan Kelley at (800) 545-2433, ext. 4226 or jokelley@ala.org.
Gordon Conable was a California librarian and intellectual freedom champion who served several terms as president of the Freedom to Read Foundation. He was executive vice president for public libraries at Library Systems and Services (LSSI) in Riverside, Calif., and was responsible for management and performance of LSSI’s public library contracts, including the 30-branch Riverside County, Calif., system. He also served as director of the Monroe County (Mich.) Library System from 1988–1998. During his tenure there, he withstood an intense controversy over Madonna’s book “Sex.” Before that he was associate director of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library in Washington. For his efforts, Conable received the Freedom to Read Foundation Roll of Honor Award and the John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award for “intellectual freedom fighters.” In 1994 he was the first librarian recognized as Michigan’s Public Administrator of the Year.
Following his unexpected death in 2005, his wife and FTRF created the Conable Fund, which provides funding for the Conable Scholarship. To contribute to the Conable Fund, visit the Conable Fund page, contact the Freedom to Read Foundation at (800) 545-2433, ext. 4226 or e-mail ftrf@ala.org.
The Freedom to Read Foundation, a sister organization of the American Library Association, was founded in 1969 to promote and defend the right of individuals to freely express ideas and to access information in libraries and elsewhere. FTRF fulfills its mission through the disbursement of grants to individuals and groups, primarily for the purpose of aiding them in litigation, and through direct participation in litigation dealing with freedom of speech and of the press.
